Visual coherence– a crucial factor for perception of renewable energy infrastructures

Visual landscape disruption is often a key argument against renewable energy infrastructure such as wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. But what defines visual disturbance in particular?

But what defines visual disturbance in particular? Based on a visual experiment, higher levels of visual disturbance from renewable energy infrastructure were found to be rated as less visually coherent. This effect was particularly strong for natural landscapes, leading to the conclusion that coherence of scale, colors, and shapes between infrastructures and their surroundings is an important factor in perception.
