Developing Shared and Desired Spatial Energy Visions

Our new article «Integrated participatory visioning for a shared and desired spatial energy future» in European Planning Studies examines how participatory visioning can support desirable spatial developments and societal transitions, such as the energy transition.

The study applies an integrated participatory visioning approach at the strategic planning level to develop a regional spatial energy vision in Switzerland. An ex-post survey of participants (N=46) and non-participants (N=703) shows that future-focused participation helps create shared and desired visions, increases approval, and fosters learning. Importantly, communicating both the process and outcomes to non-participants can furtherenhance learning, approval, and perceived legitimacy.

Overall, the findings highlight the potential of participatory foresight approaches to move beyond acceptance-driven engagement and support shared futures aligned with community priorities. The full article can be found external page here.
