The importance of land use on different scales for birds in agricultural areas
A new paper of Noëlle Klein et al. compares the importance of field-level land use compared to landscape-level land use and the influence of directly surrounding land use for birds in agricultural landscapes.
The results show that the presence of woody structures and extensive land use are most important for birds, while heterogeneity and semi-natural structures promote biodiversity at the landscape level. The effect of directly surrounding land use interacts with field use. Grasslands benefit from nearby variegated fallows, while croplands benefit from nearby extensive grasslands. The results should help to better understand and estimate biodiversity in agricultural areas.
